Founded in 1996, the BBR division of Zoran (formally Microtune) invented the single-chip TV tuner, known as the MicroTuner™. Their silicon tuner technology revolutionized the way engineers design RF reception functionality for off-air and cable broadcasts. Today more than 80 U.S. patents protect their technology and intellectual property.

 

In July 2009, they acquired Auvitek International, Ltd., a supplier of high-performance demodulator ICs. The acquisition added new baseband products and technology to their product portfolio and enhanced their intellectual property, engineering talent and China market presence.

Zoran’s target markets are:

 

Cable Television (CATV)

Products designed for this market send and/or receive broadband signals using the CATV and Digital Terestrial networks. These products include tuners, receivers and amplifiers for DOCSIS®/EuroDOCSIS™ high-speed voice and data cable modems, digital cable set-top boxes, digital cable set-top boxes, DVBT, ATSC and ISDBT set-top boxes and hybrid analogue/digital set-top boxes.

 

Digital Television (DTV)

For off-air/terrestrial DTV, Zoran has products that receive analogue/digital or all digital broadcast signals. These products, including tuners, receivers and demodulators, are designed for use in popular consumer electronics devices such as high-definition TVs, integrated digital television (iDTV) sets, digital terrestrial set-top converter boxes and various TV peripherals such as portable DVD players, digital personal video recorders (DVRs), DVD recorders and PC/TV multimedia products.

 

 

Automotive Entertainment

Zoran’s specialised products for this market are used in automotive as well as commercial aircraft environments which have stringent manufacturing and reliability specifications.

Their automotive electronics products range from components for traditional AM/FM radios (including tuners and in-glass antenna amplifiers) to components for new digital entertainment applications, such as in-car television, in-flight video and software defined radio. Zoran’s RF solutions deliver superior performance, reliability, and manufacturability while meeting the unique transportation industry challenges of temperature, vibration, and long product lifetimes.

Products:

Zoran’s BBR portfolio is made up of silicon tuner and tuner module products, which are also complimented by application-specific Zoran amplifier and upconverter devices.

The company also offers a family of demodulators, and, with its new line of products based on the MicroCeiver™ architecture, it will also offer new classes of highly integrated receiver front-ends.

Zoran continue to lead the industry in RF Silicon technology and have further expanded their products to include and integrate Demodulator technology for all worldwide Cable and Terrestrial Standards “Microceivers”. They deliver certified or pre certified RF solutions for DVB-C, DVB-T, US Cable specifications such as SCTE-40, ISDBT, DTMB and all DOCSIS (incl. DOCSIS 3.0) standards.

CSR plc Announces Merger with Zoran Corporation

CSR plc and Zoran Corporation have entered into a merger agreement under which Zoran will merge with CSR.

CSR is a global leader in wireless connectivity and location.  Zoran provides market-leading imaging and video technology for digital cameras, home entertainment and multifunction printer products.  In 2010 Zoran had total pro-forma revenues of $441 million.

Strategic Rationale :

The merged company will provide differentiated, integrated technology that addresses the rapidly growing market for connected, location-aware multimedia devices including handsets, digital cameras and home entertainment equipment.  Combining the two highly complementary technology portfolios is designed to uniquely position the merged company to deliver advanced platforms to capture and stream media-rich content.  This will strengthen the ability of the combined customer base to provide differentiated products to the end consumer.

The merger is designed to:

Strengthen CSR’s core business by adding imaging and video capabilities within its existing end markets;

Create new growth opportunities within global consumer markets such as internet enabled, location-aware digital cameras and the next generation of home entertainment products and peripherals.  It is expected that subject to regulatory and share holder approvals the merger will complete around the end of Quarter Two, 2011.
